Understanding Wines

Since you cannot always taste a wine before buying it, knowing how to read its label is the key to an informed purchase.

Understanding a wine label is simple once you've learned the following basics! Click here to view a picture of a Ruffino wine label with corresponding number tags for you to follow along with the lesson below.

1. The name of the brand -- usually the same as the winery that produces the wine.
2. Art or logo representing the proprietary wine name.
3. Proprietary name of wine.
4. The name of the wine-growing region, district, or village to which the wine is entitled according to how it was produced.
5. Classification of the wine -- usually government controlled.
6. The vintage or year in which the grapes were harvested. One-hundred percent of the wine must be from the year on the label.
7. Weight and alcohol by volume.
8. Bottler information.
